Just Do It...Yourself!

I live in a shoebox. A tiny, well-decorated (if I do say so myself), high-ceilinged, brand new, SHOE. BOX. When apartment hunting, I had 3 absolute MUST HAVES; it had to be close to the freeway,  had to have wood floors, and some sort of outdoor space was ESSENTIAL. I had seen several apartments that gave me 2 out of 3 but I held out hope that I could find that rare, affordable-but-still-fabulously-chic apartment that met all of my needs and when I found my current complex I knew it was home.

The only drawback was that I was very limited on space, thus causing me to get creative with my decor choices. Normally I would advise my clients against having a workspace in the bedroom, but in this case there literally was nowhere else for it to go...so here we are! I searched high and low, Pinterest board after Pinterest board, looking for the perfect desk. It had to be simple and visually unobtrusive but still stylish enough to go with my existing decor.

Enter the VITTSJO...

VITTSJO laptop table

After seeing countless gorgeous "hacks" of this inexpensive laptop table I knew I HAD to have it immediately! The simple frame and narrow profile made it a perfect piece to fit into my small 10' x 10' bedroom. After a short but satisfying trip to IKEA, I lugged my brand new, very heavy and very unassembled desk up the 3 flights of stairs to my apartment...my elevator just HAD to be broken the one time I decide to buy something heavy!

After the often emotional process that comes with assembling an IKEA piece I was ready to commence my hacking! I picked up some acrylic craft paint in various colors and also snagged some GORGEOUS marble contact paper from Amazon that I knew would be perfect to cover the existing glass top.

After a rather messy paint job (there is STILL silver paint splatter on my kitchen floor!) the desk frame was now a beautiful silver gunmetal. The contact paper proved to be a little trickier than I had anticipated and sadly I ended up with a few air bubbles...

Nothing a little well-placed accessories couldn't fix! All in all, I think this was a very successful hack that allows me to have a stylish furniture piece for a STEAL! Check out the pictures below and tell me how you would hack a Vittsjo for your space!

Still have a ways to go in terms of styling, but I LOVE IT!
