Small Space? No Biggie!

5 ways my clients get big style in cozy spaces...

As time goes on, I have realized that many of my clients are bucking the traditional idea of owning a big sprawling home and choosing to, instead, go for smaller and more affordable options like studio apartments and even tiny houses that are not only adorable, but also portable! (Seriously, how cute is this house?)

With the limited amount of square footage to work with, it’s easy to sacrifice style in the name of function and space, BUT I would never advise such a thing! Here are some of my favorite ways to get the most style when my clients have limited square footage.

1. I look for pieces that serve more than one function.

With a smaller floor plan, furniture that serves more than one purpose is KEY. It frees up space and allows you to adapt your room to fit more than one need. Like this cool coffee/ dining room table from Modern Sensibility that allows you to save space while still dining in style. Swoon!

2. “APARTMENT-SIZED” FURNITURE IS THE WAY TO GO!

Several furniture stores offer options for furniture that is smaller in scale and more suited for your adorable abode. Not to worry, though this furniture is little, it is FIERCE!  (see what I did there?)

3. STORAGE, STORAGE, STORAGE.

Let’s face it, even though my clients love their cozy place they still need to have a home for their STUFF! I love adding storage to everyday items to maintain order and keep those not-so-pretty things behind (stylish) closed doors.

4. MIRRORS!

This may seem like a small change, (pun totally intended) but adding a reflective surface in a small room can visually give you TWICE the space! The key is tricking the eye to seeing more than what is actually there. It makes your room lighter, brighter, and feels more open.

5. PRIORITIZE.

Sure, you may love that Edwardian escritoire you got from your uncle Titus, but does it really belong in your studio apartment??? When my clients are short on space, making room for items that are absolutely necessary is key. Anything that doesn’t serve a purpose functionally as well as aesthetically has got to go!

These strategies may seem simple, but they are sure to take your small space from cluttered and drab, to chic and FAB!
