2017 was all about the clean, simple hygge, but 2018's next big decor trend is a little more rustic and lived in. Focusing on the beauty of imperfection, wabi-sabi is the trend you're sure to see more of this year!

If you're anything like me, you heard 'wabi-sabi' and immediately thought "Mmmmm sushi..." and while this traditional Japanese style does have a name similar to your favorite spicy green sushi accouterments, it's got it's own unique meaning. Wabi-sabi (δΎ˜ε―‚) is not only a design aesthetic, but a philosophy rooted in Zen Buddhism that focuses on acceptance and admiration of the imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.

Characteristics of wabi-sabi style include; roughness, asymmetry, imperfection, simplicity, and modesty. This translates into decor with finishes that are well-loved and lived in. Think natural linens and cotton, wood pieces that bear the scuffs and nicks of years of use. This style stands in stark contrast to the often cookie-cutter, mass-produced items we see on store shelves every day, which brings a freshness and originality to design.
